Importing an adult doll into Germany
Tax and duty
<strong>This changed very recently.</strong> The €150 customs duty-free threshold was abolished with effect from 1 July 2026. Consignments up to €150 now attract a flat €3 customs charge per tariff position on the declaration, and import VAT at 19% applies on top, calculated on customs value plus duty plus freight and insurance. Dolls almost always sit well above €150, so they fall outside the flat-rate band entirely and clear under the normal tariff — full third-country duty plus 19% import VAT. The carrier normally advances the charges and bills you.
What customs actually does
The documented sequence for a doll with childlike features is: parcel inspected and seized by Zoll at import, referral to the public prosecutor, who must investigate on its own motion, and confiscation and destruction of the item on conviction. How Zoll draws the adult/child line in practice — on height, proportions or facial morphology — is not published, and that ambiguity is the real risk for a lawful buyer of a petite adult doll.
Prohibited regardless of anything else
Criminal, including simple possession. Section 184l of the Criminal Code, in force since 1 July 2021, punishes acquisition, possession and bringing such a doll into or through Germany with up to three years, and commercial manufacture, trade or import with up to five. It expressly covers replicas of a child’s body part, so torsos are in scope, not only whole dolls. In May 2026 the Federal Constitutional Court rejected challenges to the provision, holding the interference justified.

Practical notes for buyers
- Germany criminalises possession, not just import. That is stricter than the UK position and catches buyers who assume a delivered parcel is the end of the matter.
- Torsos and body-part replicas are covered. Buying a part rather than a whole doll is not a workaround.
- Any guide quoting a €150 duty-free allowance is out of date as of 1 July 2026.
