Importing an adult doll into South Korea
Tax and duty
VAT is 10% on imports. The personal-use de minimis is USD 150, or USD 200 for goods of US origin under the Korea–US agreement. A doll exceeds both, so expect duty plus 10% VAT on the full value. Personal imports also require a Personal Customs Clearance Code, which you must obtain before ordering.
What customs actually does
Clearance is now the norm for a standard adult doll, but three things still get shipments stopped. Youthful styling is assessed on overall appearance including height, weight, face and voice, so petite or young-faced models are the practical danger zone. Dolls made to resemble a specific identifiable person are expressly barred. And dolls with built-in electrical functions such as heating, voice or massage trigger a separate safety-certification requirement. The April 2026 ruling was explicit that customs cannot refuse clearance on external appearance alone — it must examine the purpose of import, the user, and the environment and manner of use.
Prohibited regardless of anything else
Prohibited. The Supreme Court held in November 2021 that a device realistically modelled on the physical appearance of a female minor treats children as sexual objects and is therefore goods harming public morals under Article 234. The 2022 customs guideline codified this, barring minor-form dolls assessed on height, weight, face and voice.

Practical notes for buyers
- Get your Personal Customs Clearance Code before you order, not after the parcel arrives.
- Avoid celebrity or real-person likeness commissions. Korea expressly bars them, and no other jurisdiction we looked at is as explicit.
- Consider ordering without heating or voice electronics to avoid the separate safety-certification path.

Not on any prohibited list and no statute bans it — but an officer can still classify it as an obscene article. A grey zone, not a safe harbour.
Malaysia
Treat as prohibited. Enforcement is active and seizures are routine — our advice is not to attempt import.
Thailand
Illegal to import, with real criminal exposure. Open sale in local markets gives a false sense of safety — the border is the chokepoint.
